Acupuncture
What is it?
Acupuncture is a holistic treatment form of Chinese medicine in which thin, sterile needles are inserted into key points to produce a healing response. This technique has been used in veterinary practice in China for thousands of years to treat many ailments.

Acupuncture helps stimulates the body’s own defense systems, resulting in increased circulation, reduced inflammation, and the the release of neurotransmitters such as endorphins from the brain
What conditions is Acupuncture used for?
Acupuncture is indicated for functional problems such as those that involve paresis, noninfectious inflammation (such as allergies), and pain. For small animals, the following are some of the general conditions which may be treated with acupuncture:

  • Painful or inflammatory conditions—Any condition resulting in pain and inflammation can be improved with acupuncture. From allergic skin disease to autoimmune disorders to a traumatic injury.
  • Osteoarthritis—Pain, inflammation, and decreased mobility may all improve with the use of acupuncture.
  • Nerve pain and intervertebral disc disease—Acupuncture can help these problems by helping to manage pain and inflammation
  • Gastrointestinal problems—Changes in gut motility and blood flow can affect the function of the digestive tract, resulting in vomiting or diarrhea
  • Cancer management—While acupuncture can’t cure cancer, it can help to manage side effects like lethargy, nausea, and pain that improve a patient’s quality of life.
  • Relief from asthma, allergies, or other respiratory problems.
  • Skin condition relief and increased blood circulation, targeting allergic dermatitis, inflammation, hot spots, or granulomas.

What to expect during Acupuncture
Acupuncture is performed with sterilized single-use thin stainless steel needles. There is occasionally a brief moment of sensitivity as the needle penetrates the skin in certain sensitive areas. Once the needles are in place, most patients relax, and even may fall asleep during treatment.

Acupuncture is Available now at Preiser Animal Hospital by appointment only!

We offer telemedicine services to clients whose pets have an existing veterinary client-patient relationship and have been seen in our clinic within the last year.

With a telemedicine appointment, our clients can request prescription refills, ask us questions about medical concerns, and more. The telemedicine appointment is an opportunity for new clients to “meet and greet” and to provide records ahead of time. In the time of COVID, this is a good alternative to meet someone face to face.

MICROCHIP PLACEMENT
Highly recommended (and encouraged) by our veterinarians, the AVID microchip identification system provides a means of permanent identification for your beloved pet.  The AVID retrieval system involves a quick, simple procedure of injecting a tiny microchip, the size of a grain of rice, under the skin between the shoulder blades of your dog or cat.  Each chip is coded with a special 10-digit code registered with the PETtrac which is a globalized computer tracking system.  If your pet ever gets lost, one quick scan will identify who the pet belongs to will be returned to you quicker than any other way!  Preiser Animal Hospital Urgent Care & Wellness Appointments is currently only charging $65 for this service so call our office now and schedule an appointment to have your pet microchipped today or request that this be done the next time you board your animal with us (847) 641-2161.  For more information about the AVID microchip identification system go to www.avidid.com.
